Electricity for an Efficient and Decarbonised Europe
The Electrification Alliance is an undertaking of Avere, EURELECTRIC, the European Copper Institute, the European Heat Pump Association, SolarPower Europe and WindEurope aimed at promoting the vital role of electricity in working towards an efficient, decarbonised Europe.
On 23rd June 2017 in Brussels, the Alliance launched their Declaration on Electrification outlining the value of electricity in Europe's future. This initiative is supported by a number of RealValue consortium partners and stakeholders including Glen Dimplex, ESB, ESBN, Latvenergo and SSE.
The 'Ireland's Champions of EU Research' event held by Enterprise Ireland on 28th June 2017 recognised the achievements of Irish companies and academic and research organisations within the Horizon 2020 Programme.
To date Ireland has secured €424 million of funding through Horizon 2020, aiming to attract a total of €1.25 billion through this programme which runs from 2014-2020. Strong national contact points, national delegates and a developed collaboration network have been a major factor in successfully securing funding.
Glen Dimplex, coordinator of the RealValue project, was delighted to receive a certificate acknowledging its leadership within Horion 2020. Project Director Rowena McCappin participated in a panel discussion as part of the awards event in Dublin, highlighting the positive experience and opportunities presented to Glen Dimplex through coordinating the RealValue project and participating in the EU's BRIDGE initiative.

RealValue fights the internet and wins!
RealValue partners from Glen Dimplex and SSE travelled to Estoril, Portugal, for 19th-20th June to participate in what is now a regular fixture in the project’s calendar – the EURELECTRIC Annual Convention. The conference kicked off with Session I on ‘The Value of Electrification’ during Glen Dimplex was delighted to have the opportunity to give a live demonstration of the RealValue solution.
A brand new video clip showcasing the technology used within the project was unveiled at this event – check it out on our YouTube channel!
Project Director Rowena McCappin demonstrated the Intel aggregation platform in action – pushing heating requirements from a subset of Quantum heating appliances within the project through the optimisation engine to produce an optimised charging schedule. The Intel gateway management platform was also shown, as well as the CRM system developed by SSE with Logic to host a wide range of heating data which can be viewed and compared in a range of graphs. Finally, the app, allowing remote control of the SETS appliances at any time, was presented. The full demonstration was well received, despite a glitch with the conference internet connection which was quickly rectified (but nevertheless ensured that all of the 400+ participants remembered RealValue well!)
There was a high-level of interest in the project, with a large number of participants visiting the RealValue exhibition to obtain more information and view the SETS heater and cylinder on display.
Looking beyond 2020
SSE exhibited RealValue at the Energy Ireland Conference in Dublin on 13th -14th June.
This is one of the largest annual events in the Irish energy calendar, attracting a total of around 300 delegates.
RealValue presented in Portland USA
Dave Boundy, Head of IOT at Intel, delivered a presentation on Microservices for Grid Stability, including RealValue, during the Real World Technology, Design & Policy Challenges Panel at the Transactive Energy Systems Conference in Portland, USA on 12th-15th June 2017.
Members of the Irish consortium hosted a visit from one of the largest energy companies in Japan
On 8th-9th June 2017, Intel, SSE, EirGrid, Glen Dimplex and ESBN hosted representatives from Kansai Electric, one of the largest energy companies in Japan, to provide an in-depth understanding of the RealValue project and to discuss potential collaborations.

The EEEIC conference has becoming a leading event for experts in electrical engineering and the environment. It is attended by universities, industry representatives, governmental and non-governmental organisations from across the world.
‘Engaging People in Domestic Demand Response’ Workshop
RealValue researchers from the University of Oxford attended the ECEEE (European Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy) Summer Study on energy efficiency on 29th May-3rd June. With over 400 attendees from across the world, this was an unrivalled opportunity to meet delegates on the cutting edge of energy research and policy implementation.
Sarah Higginson and Marina Topouzi ran an interactive workshop on ‘Engaging People in Domestic Demand Response’. They shared insight and learnings from RealValue, and were able to draw on a wide range of practical and policy experience from other participants with examples of engagement in Portugal, Canada, USA, Australia, Switzerland and UK.
The RealValue team hopes to use the discussion to derive principles for good consumer engagement and to develop an ‘engagement decision matrix’. The session also revealed an interest in non-financial incentives, an emerging area which Oxford will be following closely.
Neighbourhoods of the Future Conference
Dave Boundy, Director of IoT at Intel, presented RealValue at the Agile Ageing Alliance Neighbourhoods of the Future conference held in RBS headquarters in London on 10th-11th May.
Dave's session entitled 'New Horizons' focussed on the Enernet aggregation platform developed by Intel and used within RealValue. He also addressed the benefits IoT services can bring to an ageing population.
The event was attended by experts, industry representatives and policy makers including the UK cabinet office.

'Engaged energy consumers – Clean Energy for All Europeans'
Project Director Rowena McCappin, was delighted to be invited to act as rapporteur for the breakout session on 'New energy technologies and data management' at the 9th Citizens' Energy Forum which took place in London on 30th-31st May 2017.
The Citizens' Energy Forum was established by the European Commission in 2007 with the aim of creating a competitive, 'smart' energy-efficient and fair energy retail market for consumers. It meets annually in London with the support of Ofgem, the regulatory authority for electricity and gas in the UK.
This year's Forum focussed on the European Commission's 'Clean Energy for All Europeans' legislative package.
Exploring disruption, change and opportunity in European heating markets
Project Director Rowena McCappin delivered a presentation on RealValue and the EC BRIDGE initiative during the session on 'New business models and opportunities in the coupling of the electricity and heat sectors' at the Delta-ee European Heat Summit in Edinburgh on 8th June 2017.
This event attracted over 70 industry experts from across Europe who had the opportunity to engage in stimulating panel discussions.
The Value Proposition for Energy Systems Integration
RealValue partners participated in an iiESI (International Institute for Energy Systems Integration) workshop on 16th May 2017 hosted by Imperial College in conjunction with EPRI (Electric Power Research Institute).
Prof. Mark O'Malley (UCD) led the 'Energy Systems Integration Framework' session. Project Director Rowena McCappin gave a presentation on 'RealValue - Integrating the Customer', which included an overview of the valuable work going on within the BRIDGE initiative.
The next phase of recruitment activities in Ireland are well underway!
SSE and Glen Dimplex hosted a Coffee Morning on the 26th April at Clúid Housing in Limerick to inform tenants about RealValue and answer any questions about the technology or participation in the trial.
Further similar events will be held in other locations as this is an excellent way to engage participants and ensure success with recruitment!
The RealValue team donned their running kit to raise £1300 for charity!
The RealValue Project Management Office enjoyed fantastically sunny weather on 1st May as they participated in the Belfast City Marathon as part of a team of 16 family and friends (three relay entries and one solo runner) to raise money for The Prince’s Trust.
The team would like to thank all colleagues and friends who providde moral support and contributed so generously to their fundraising efforts!
They were delighted to have been able to raise a grand total of nearly £1300 for The Prince’s Trust, an inspirational charity which helps young people in the UK to get access to jobs, education and training. Find out more at www.princes-trust.org.uk.

Glen Dimplex presents RealValue at EURELECTRIC Conference
RealValue was exhibited at the EURELECTRIC ‘Power to the People - Electrification of the European Economy’ conference in Brussels on 19th April.
Glen Dimplex President Sean O’Driscoll participated in a panel session, and Project Director Rowena McCappin also had the opportunity to give an overview of Glen Dimplex technologies and projects, including RealValue, to the 150 participants.

VTT hosted the two-day meeting in Helsinki for all project partners.
The six-monthly RealValue Consortium Meeting took place in Helsinki on 5th-6th April, attended by representatives from all partner organisations.
The meeting served as a formal update on all Work Packages within the Project. It was also used as an opportunity to carry out filming for a new video clip showcasing the RealValue demonstrations in Ireland, Germany and Latvia. The clip will be available on the RealValue YouTube channel soon.
The RealValue team at VTT were excellent hosts, organising a site visit to their ‘Zero-Energy Building’ Emulator Project, as well as treating participants to an authentic dinner of Lappish delicacies including reindeer, elk and bear!
Every year SSE Airtricity financially supports local communities near their wind farms.
This year they have provided over €220,000 to 40+ organisations including schools, sports clubs, men’s sheds, community alerts and many others. RealValue was exhibited at the annual Community Fund event in Limerick on 7th March 2017.The SSE RealValue team was there to support the community fund and offer people the opportunity to learn about and get involved with the RealValue Project.
‘Energy Poverty and Climate Action’
Members of the RealValue team at SSE and Glen Dimplex attended the Energy Action Fuel Poverty Conference in Croke Park, Dublin on 6th March. The theme of this year’s conference was ‘Energy Poverty and Climate Action’; it was opened by Denis Naughten TD, Irish Government Minister for Communications, Climate Action, and Environment and featured speakers from Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland, England, and Belgium.
David Manning, Director of Home Energy at SSE Airtricity, presented the company’s work in the area of fuel poverty, and also spoke about the aims and achievements of the RealValue project. The RealValue exhibition attracted a range of visitors during the networking and viewing sessions.
The Intel team had a successful visit to Latvia on 15-16th February 2017.
A workshop was delivered on the Aggregator features, as well as practical training on connection to the Partner API, analysis of initial data from Latvian deployment, access to and use of the RealValue App.
Bi-directional communication was tested and the necessary updates made.
The first appliance in the RTU lab was switched to Aggregator control mode and testing is ongoing.
The RealValue Review Meeting in February 2017 provided the perfect opportunity to see RealValue in action!
EirGrid kindly hosted this meeting which included a presentation on their DS3 strategy and tour of the National Control Centre, allowing the European Commission officials and RealValue partners to witness the results of the first phase of integration with the TSO.
Glen Dimplex, SSE and Intel also demonstrated the end-to-end solution including the SETS appliances and App in operation.
Positive feedback on RealValue from the European Commission!
The RealValue project submitted its 1st Periodic Report, covering months 1-18 of the project to the European Commission at the end of January 2017. This was followed by a Review Meeting in Dublin led by Adas Pangonis (Project Officer, EC, INEA) and Rémy Dénos (Policy Officer, EC, DG Energy) and attended by key project partners from all organisations. The EC officials were impressed by work within the project to date, expressing particular interest in the activities around consumer engagement and the initial findings from the research carried out by the University of Oxford. The RealValue project described as exemplary in terms of its work on Dissemination, and Ethics and Data Protection.
RealValue Irish demo partners focus on Work Package 5 activities
Two workshops took place in January 2017, hosted by SSE and EirGrid, and joined by Intel, UCD and ESB, to discuss the design of the scenario testing activities in Work Package 5 Demonstration & Analysis. This activity will assess the potential of the developed RealValue aggregator service, through modelling and demonstrating a number of system scenarios. Various design questions have been explored and split into the four main areas: retail, wholesale (market & ancillary services), networks, and the economic potential of the aggregator. At a further workshop at UCD in February, partners continued to build on this framework and develop an agreed method.

On 24th-25thJanuary, members of the RealValue Consortium met in Berlin to discuss how best to analyse business models offering flexibility to the electricity market.
The meeting followed the decision to refocus Work Package 6 on business models, whilst also analysing market regulations as originally planned. During the first session, the aspects of business models to be scrutinised were agreed upon. This included firstly, market regulation and technical implementation, secondly, financing of the business, and, thirdly, interaction with contractors and customers. In the following sessions, the scientific project members presented their thoughts on how to analyse these areas, followed by intensive discussions with contributions from all participants. At the close of the meeting, roles and responsibilities were assigned and next steps agreed.
RealValue participates in BRIDGE Working Groups and Coordination Meeting in Brussels.
Members of the RealValue Consortium participated in the BRIDGE Working Group and Coordination meetings in Brussels in January 2017. RealValue is an active member of the BRIDGE initiative, participating in all four Working Groups (Customer Engagement, Data Management, Regulation and Business Models).
At these meetings, RealValue Project Director, Rowena McCappin, who acts as rapporteur for the Business Models WG, presented on the Business Models WG Annual Report submitted to the EC in 2016. Dr Sarah Darby of the University of Oxford gave a presentation on Consumer Engagement. The RealValue project has been consistently cited as an example for its work in this area.
Through BRIDGE, the RealValue project has been able to successfully share knowledge and learnings in a tangible way with project from across the EU and beyond.
University of Oxford researchers interview the RealValue Germany team
On 13th-14th December, researchers from the University of Oxford visited Germany. On the first evening, a focus group was conducted (in German) with six installers and three members of the RealValue consortium from MVV and GDD. The following day they met with BEEGY and GDD to discuss the technical aspects of the heating and hot water systems and the App. This visit has provided valuable feedback for Oxford on the installations and the slightly different technology in Germany, both vital parts of the customer experience and so important in understanding the contrast between the different demo sites. All of the data collected will feed in to the Consumer Impact Study to be delivered at the end of the project.
The European Commission published its long-awaited Clean Energy Package (formerly referred to as the ‘Winter Package’) on 30th November 2016.
This package contains a wide range of measures aimed at keeping the EU competitive within the global energy game, including on eco design, energy efficiency, renewable energy and electricity market design.

Project Director Rowena McCappin presented at the 10th Central European Energy Conference in Bratislava on 30th November to 30th December 2016.
Rowena participated in the Renewable Energy panel, giving an overview of renewable energy in Ireland, the RealValue project, Smart Electric Thermal Storage technologies and the role they can play in Demand Side Management, and Bridge, the EC initiative which enables knowledge sharing and collaboration between other Horizon 2020 Smart Grid and Storage projects.
The session was chaired by András Siegler, Director of Directorate G – Energy, RTD and the other speakers were: Diego Pavía, Chief Executive Officer, KIC InnoEnergy; Konstantin Staschus, Secretary-General, ENTSO-E; Eicke R. Weber, President, Association of European Renewable Energy Research Centres – EUREC; Director, Fraunhofer ISE, Freiburg; and Igor Kočiš, CEO, GA Drilling, Bratislava.
The conference included 8 main panels focussed on the priorities of the Energy Union and SET Plan, as well as 6 parallel thematic dinner sessions on related subjects. It was attended by around 600 policy-makers and leading representatives from business, science and innovation, civil society and regional and local government.
RealValue presented at the UK Energy Storage Conference Birmingham on 30th November to 2nd December 2016.
Ger Finneran, Glen Dimplex Demand Side and Smart Grid Project Engineer, who is responsible for the technical management of the RealValue project, presented RealValue at UKES2016 Conference. During the Demonstration Projects session, Ger gave an update on the RealValue trials in German, Ireland and Latvia as well as an overview of projects' aims and Smart Electric Thermal Storage technology.
This event was aimed at researchers from academia, industry and policy in the field of energy storage, and provided a platform for sharing ideas for future collaboration.

Consortium members DIW, RTU, UCD and VTT have delivered a report on socio-economic & housing trends in selected countries.
This RealValue Deliverable supports the project's model builders by providing in-depth information on socio-economic and housing trends in Ireland, Finland, Germany, and Latvia. These are the countries in which smart electric thermal storages will be installed during the course of the project.
From the outset, the report compares the economic performance of the chosen countries with that of all other countries in the EU-28. It also provides an overview of electricity and natural gas prices by price components such as levies and taxes to indicate the competitiveness of electricity for heating.
Finally, the in-depth country studies provide the reader with detailed information on historic and projected population and housing trends, in addition to information on building efficiency, temperatures, and residential energy consumption.

Researchers from Riga Technical University participated in the think tank “Be Energy-Efficient” which took place at Elektrum Energy Efficiency Centre in Jurmala on 5th November 2016.
This was a family-friendly event organised for the participants of the smart metering pilot project in Latvia. Diana Zalostiba introduced the audience to the RealValue project. Other presentations were made on residential PV technologies and solar energy storage, while the youngest participants had lots of fun with hands-on learning in interactive physics experiments.
Since 1997, Elektrum Energy Efficiency Centre has been raising public awareness about energy efficient and environmentally friendly electricity usage. The Centre is also one of the RealValue trial participants in Latvia as they have two Quantum heaters installed in one of the exhibition halls.
The RealValue project was presented at the Baltic Energy Forum 2016, which took place in Riga on 28th October.
Speakers and participants in this the forum included a number of stakeholders from the energy sector, including the Ministry of Economics of Latvia, European Smart Metering and Smart Energy Association, producers and traders of electricity and heat, representatives from industry, researchers and other involved parties. The main topic of this year’s forum was Smart Energy Baltics.
Zane Broka and Olegs Linkevics from Riga Technical University presented the objective, main tasks and expected impact of the RealValue project and provided an update of the ongoing trial activities in Latvia within the forum session on smart buildings, IoT and smart homes.
As part of the Consortium Meeting in October, RealValue partners were able to visit some of the trial demo sites in the Mannheim region.
This was a great chance to see the RealValue technology in action and partners appreciated the opportunity to speak to participants directly to hear about their experience of using the heating equipment and app, and to get their feedback from the trial so far.
Many thanks to the trial participants in German for welcoming the RealValue partners into their homes, and to MVV for facilitating the site visits.

Partners from all organisations in the RealValue project gathered in Mannheim on 18th-19th October for a full Consortium Meeting.
The two days were dedicated to discussing progress to date in all Work Packages; getting updates on the deployment of the RealValue solution at trial sites in Ireland, Germany and Latvia which is well underway; and sharing key learnings between consortium partners. The agenda also included a session on preparation for the First Periodic Review which will take place in early 2017. The Project Steering Board had their regular 6-monthly meeting at the end of the event, reflecting on the discussions of the two days.
RealValue partners were given the opportunity to visit some of the demonstration homes and witness the trial in action, kindly facilitated by MVV and the participants in Germany.
Many thanks to all partners for actively participating to make this a really productive and useful meeting as the project, now entering Month 18, reaches the halfway point.
The next full Consortium Meeting will take place in Helsinki in April 2017.
RealValue presented at Pöyry/Eurelectric event.
David Noronha, Strategy Programme Manager from SSE Airtricity presented the RealValue project at a conference organised by Pöyry and Eurelectric in Brussels on the 5th October. The conference was entitled: A Customer Focused Energy Business: Positioning in a Changing World. There was a real diverse mix of speakers from start-ups and SMEs to large-scale energy utilities, all with a strong focus on the customer.
It was a great opportunity to promote the RealValue solution and discuss the ongoing growing change in the energy industry. As part of discussion, David explained how RealValue seeks to demonstrate new business models that Demand Side Management presents including value for both the customer and the energy system. RealValue Project Director presents in Brussels
Rowena McCappin was delighted to deliver a presentation on the 'Dos and Donts of submitting a proposal' at the H2020 Smart Grids and Storage Infoday event in Brussels on 3rd October.
This event was aimed at potential applicants for the 'Smart Grids and Storage' calls for projects which will be funded under the 2016/17 H2020 Work Programme 'Secure, Clean and Efficient Energy'. In particular there was a focus on the 'Competitive low-carbon energy' (LCE) call (LCE-01-2016-2017, LCE-04-2017 and LCE-05-2017).
The Infoday attracted an impressive 500 attendees (70% participating for the first time) from 30 countries.
Project presented at Energy Storage Global Conference in Brussels
RealValue Project Director Rowena McCappin and Communications Officer Anna Zmuda Trzebiatowska travelled to Brussels for an action-packed week at the EASE Energy Storage Global Conference.
This conference, now in its 2nd year and attended by over 200 participants, puts the spotlight on energy storage, providing opportunities for discussion and networking between key stakeholders in the sector.
The RealValue team prestented the project to a wide range of visitors at the dedicated RealValue exhibition area.

The RealValue team was delighted to be at the launch of The Ludgate Hub in Skibbereen, Ireland on 29th July.
Project Director Rowena McCappin and Communications Officer Anna Zmuda Trzebiatowska used the opportunity to network with other attendees and promote the work of RealValue.
The Ludgate Hub located in Skibbereen in the South-West of Ireland is the country's first digital hub. With a staggering 1000MB of connectivity, it provides shared workspace for up to 75 people, and by 2020 aims to create 500 direct jobs and 1000 indirect jobs in the West Cork area.
Ludgate Hub is also the first non-domestic participant in the RealValue Irish trial.
The hub was developed by a group of entrepreneurs, digital ambassadors and local business owners, including Sean O'Driscoll, President of the Glen Dimplex Group.
RealValue Irish Trial welcomes its first non-domestic participant!
The RealValue project is delighted to welcome Ludgate Hub in Skibbereen, Ireland as the first non-domestic participant in the Irish Trial.
On 26th July, the Glen Dimplex team were at Ludgate, with remote support of Intel, to carry out the RealValue comms upgrade to the SETS heaters installed in the Hub.
Ludgate is Ireland’s first high-speed digital hub and has 1000MB of connectivity, making it the fastest broadband connection in the country. Rowena McCappin was recently interviewed by the Irish Times as part of a special feature sponsored by Enterprise Ireland which leads the Horizon2020 support network in Ireland.
Rowena explained how the RealValue project, which has received €12.5M of funding through the EU’s Horizon2020 programme, will dramatically change the energy market. Trials are being carried out in 1,250 homes in Germany, Ireland and Latvia to demonstrate how Smart Electric Thermal Storage Technology in combination with advanced ICT can bring benefits to the whole energy supply chain.

Benefits of participation in Horizon2020 highlighted at breakfast meeting in Dublin.
RealValue Project Director Rowena McCappin was invited by Enterprise Ireland to speak about the RealValue project and Horizon2020 in general at a breakfast meeting in Dublin on 15th June.
At this event, attended by Irish and multinational companies, Irish Minister for Training and Skills, John Halligan TD, outlined the benefits of participating in Horizon2020 beyond financial incentives; the programme offers unrivaled opportunities for networking and collaboration between leading companies and research organisations.
Seán O’Driscoll, President of Glen Dimplex, and Martin Curley, Vice President & Director of Intel Labs Europe, backed up this message, speaking as representatives of companies which have received significant funding through Horizon2020 and are both members of the RealValue Consortium.
Julie Sinnamon, Chief Executive of Enterprise Ireland; Martin Shanahan, Chief Executive of IDA Ireland and Prof Mark Ferguson, Director General of Science Foundation Ireland and Chief Scientific Advisor to the Government, also spoke at this event, highlighting the importance of Horizon2020.

RealValue showcased at EURELECTRIC conference!
The Glen Dimplex Project Office team travelled to Vilnius to participate in the EURELECTRIC Annual Convention & Conference on 6th and 7th June, the theme of which was ‘e-lectricity: the Power Sector goes Digital’.
Communications Officer Anna Zmuda Trzebiatowska hosted a RealValue breakfast meeting on the first day of the conference which was very well attended. This was an opportunity to give an update on the RealValue project, share key learnings to date and answer questions. Olegs Linkevics from Latvenergo also gave a presentation on the Latvian trial.
The project was showcased at the RealValue exhibition stand which was visited by a wide range of visitors over the two-day event.

H2020 LCE 06-10 projects give feedback to European Commission
The RealValue project has been playing a leading role in the coordination of the Bridge Cooperation Group aimed at facilitating knowledge-sharing between other H2020 LCE 06-10 Energy Storage and Smart Grid projects.
Based on input received during the last six-monthly meetings in Brussels in March, the Bridge Business Models Working Group submitted feedback to Dr Matti Supponen (Policy Coordinator, Unit B.2 - Wholesale Markets: Electricity & Gas, DG ENER, European Commission) on Market Design legislation which is being drafted.
This was followed up by a successful workshop in Brussels on 26th May with EC officials and Chairs and Rapporteurs from the Bridge Working Groups. We look forward to continuing work with our EC colleagues on this!

RealValue Project Business Director co-chairs EASE & DG ENER event
RealValue Project Business Director Rowena McCappin was delighted to be invited to act as co-chair at an Expert Workshop on Energy Market Design for Energy Storage hosted by EASE in cooperation with DG Energy in Brussels on 25th May.
Rowena and Henrik Dam (DG ENER) co-chaired the opening session of the workshop which involved ‘snapshot’ presentations from research and demonstration projects in order to share technical, commercial and regulatory insight.
Timothée Hinchliffe, Project Manager for Storage Economics at EDF, France, and member of the RealValue International Advisory Board, also presented at the workshop during the session dedicated to ‘Energy storage to address system application/service needs’.
Project partners GDD and RTU exhibit at prestigious trade fair
RealValue partners Glen Dimplex Deutschland (GDD) and Riga Technical University (RTU) both exhibited at Hannover Messe, the world’s leading trade fair for industrial technology, which took place in Germany from 25th-29th April 2016 and attracted over 190,000 visitors.
GDD presented the RealValue project as part of their exhibition on Dimplex’s ‘Electrical Home’. This concept of a ‘Smart Home’, with interlinked electrical technologies centrally controlled by Smart Eco System, mirrors the aim of RealValue to use local small-scale storage of energy from renewable sources to optimise whole EU energy system.
Riga Technical University also participated in this prestigious event alongside leading Latvian industrial and engineering companies. The Latvian national stand included a feature on the RealValue project and RTU explained the benefits of aggregated local small-scale energy storage to numerous visitors, in line with the keynote theme of this year’s exhibition, ‘Integrated Energy - the Energy System of the Future’.

RealValue Project Business Director Rowena McCappin travelled to Canada in April 2016 to present RealValue and EU Energy Policy to a range of stakeholders.
The European Commission invited Rowena to lead sessions at an ERA-Can+ Smart Grids and Energy Storage Systems EU-Canada priority setting round-table discussion on 19th April. This was attended by international smart grid experts from industry, academia and government.
Rowena also presented at the prestigious Smart Energy Event in Halifax on 25th April, speaking on the RealValue project, EU energy policy and synergies between the EU and Canada in smart grid and storage research.
The visit to Canada also included meetings with Glen Dimplex North America, providing opportunity to update colleagues on RealValue and more generally on key developments in the energy sector in the EU.

Bridge WGs and Bridge Coordination Group met in Brussels on 15th & 16th March.
The RealValue Project has been playing an active role in Bridge, participating in all four WGs. Project Director Rowena McCappin also acts as Rapporteur for the Business Models WG.
The four Working Groups (Business Models, Data Management, Regulations & Customer Engagement) met individually in Brussels on 15th March. Participating partners from projects under the H2020 LCE6-LCE10 2014 Call reported first findings and shared insight so far.
The Bridge Coordination Group meeting took place on 16th March and featured presentations from DG Energy representatives. Matti Supponen gave an insightful overview of his department’s work on the Winter Package, including Market Design legislation. Participants from the Business Models Working Groups will be providing Matti with input on this from their projects by the end of April.
Report delivered on Role of SETS in Evolving European Energy System.
Our partners at VTT together with DIW, GDI and RTU have compiled a comprehensive market analysis report of SETS (Smart Electric Thermal Storage). The report entitled ‘Role of SETS in Evolving European Energy System’ covers all EU countries and analyses key aspects for market penetration of SETS:
The need for flexibility in the grid rises by higher shares of variable electricity generation. Since the use of SETS as a heating element concentrates on the winter months, this report looks at at the share of wind power generation in electricity mix.
Various technical approaches can provide flexibility to the grid and are therefore competing with SETS: district heating, pumped hydro and reservoir hydro power plants and interconnector capacity.
Room heating in the residential sector is seen as a suitable market segment for SETS; in particular, electrically heated homes are the potential market segment. Thus the report looks at both space heating need per inhabitant as well as share of electrical heating in space heating.
A systematic approach has been used to calculate scores for each country based on the above mentioned indicators. These are expressed in the form of traffic lights (green, yellow and red) to indicate how appealing the respective country is for the SETS market penetration.
The RealValue Team headed to Riga for an action-packed two days of events and meetings.
Members from almost all of the organisations in the 13-strong RealValue Project Consortium (BEEGY, DIW, EIRGRID, GDD, GDI, Intel, MVV, RTU, SSE, UCD, UOXF & VTT) were in Riga on 24th and 25th February for the Latvian Launch of the RealValue Project and a six-monthly Consortium Meeting kindly hosted by our partners in the Faculty of Power and Electrical Engineering at Riga Technical University.
RealValue is the first international project involving Latvian partners to explore the use of SETS (Smart Electric Thermal Storage) heating in an open electricity market with advanced ICT. The Latvian Project Launch on the 24th was an opportunity to present RealValue to local stakeholders including Latvian government officials, academics and industry representatives. Olegs Linkevics (RTU) gave a presentation on the SETS technology and its deployment in Latvia. This was followed by overviews of the RealValue trials in Ireland and Germany. The event was rounded off with a lively Q&A session.
The Project Consortium Meeting which took place the following day was an internal session allowing project partners to discuss progress so far and share experience. The Project Management Office gave an update on key developments to date. The respective Work Package leaders made presentations on the Communication & Aggregation Technology, Modelling, Consumer Engagement, Market Analysis and Project Dissemination. Finally there were presentations on the demonstrations in Ireland, Germany and Latvia including an interactive workshop which allowed partners to share learnings from the deployment so far.
Thank you to all of our partners who attended and contributed actively to the sessions to make for a very productive two days – we look forward to the next Consortium in Mannheim, Germany in October 2016!
In Germany, the RealValue consortium has started its preparations for a comprehensive study of the potential of Smart Electric Thermal Storage Systems (SETS) as a flexibility option for the power market.
800 Smart Electric Thermal Storage Systems to be installed in Irish homes
THE RealValue consortium, led by Glen Dimplex and consisting of 13 Pan-European companies, has just released details on how the RealValue research and innovation project, consisting of 1,250 homes in Ireland, Germany and Latvia, has the potential to revolutionise how consumers use and store energy via their homes.
A €15.5m European energy storage project, funded by Horizon 2020** (€12m EC funding), RealValue has been designed to accelerate innovation and develop business models necessary for use of small-scale energy storage in residential homes.
Crucial to the success of the RealValue consortium*** is the involvement of all 13 partners who represent the entire energy supply chain - including ESB Networks, EirGrid, Glen Dimplex, SSE Airtricity, Intel and the Electricity Research Centre at University College Dublin – who will collectively deliver a 36-month large scale pilot study, across five EU member states.
“It is this collective effort to further push the boundaries in renewable technology that has the potential for RealValue to be a real game changer. By involving the entire energy supply chain, RealValue will produce a robust study that will be instrumental in developing business models that quantify the potential of small-scale storage moving forward.
“RealValue will help to shape ground-breaking new ways for consumers to store and use renewable energy in their homes, via their heating system, and for energy companies to realise Demand Side Management,” explains RealValue Business Director, Rowena McCappin.
At the launch, held in Croke Park and attended by renewables experts and consortium partners, it was also announced that around 200 Irish homes have already been installed with Glen Dimplex Quantum storage heaters and Quantum cylinders. In total, 800 Quantum energy systems (Smart Electric Thermal Storage Systems - SETS) will be installed in Ireland, with 400 homes identified in Germany and the remaining 50 homes and small businesses being recruited in Latvia.
The Quantum energy system combines efficient, high-performance electric space and water heating with thermal energy storage capability. It’s the development of residential energy storage that could transform how consumers store, consume and are paid for renewable energy in the future.
Sean O’Driscoll, Chairman and Chief Executive, Glen Dimplex, explained the company’s involvement in RealValue and how Glen Dimplex has built a low carbon business worth €50m by investing in R&D, manufacturing and commercial activities.
“The Glen Dimplex Group has invested heavily in ‘demand side management’ technologies in the last five years, including the development of Quantum, our biggest-ever investment in one piece of technology.
“To address the energy challenges faced by global society in the 21st century, we must work together with utility and technology partners, creating strategic alliances, to fast-track innovation. RealValue presents us with an opportunity, through these physical demonstrations in Ireland, Germany and Latvia, to generate results that will inform the energy landscape of the future. We intend to present the results of the project to policy decision makers, helping to inform EU regulation,” comments Mr O’Driscoll.
Since launching the Quantum System in 2012 Glen Dimplex has achieved sales of more than 40m Euro and the business is growing every month. 5m Euro has been invested in RealValue in addition to the H2020 funding as the company strives to spread its low carbon, energy efficiency benefits to other markets.
Linking the Quantum systems to energy providers, Intel has developed a highly-advanced technology. The smart system will also interpret data to forecast heat demand and consumer comfort preferences, and it will interact with the grid to manage supply and congestion.

Social Media to be launched in December 2015.
RealValue social media channels are currently in development with the project’s creative agency and will be ready in December 2015.
The project will start with a Twitter account, LinkedIn and YouTube channel. All social media channels will allow for dialogue between the RealValue project and many of the key stakeholders by encouraging feedback and interaction on various aspects of project activity.

The aim of this workshop was to explore improvement potentials and interactions in storage and renewable energy technologies, demand side management, e-mobility, and energy efficient housing stock.
To gather insights relevant to the RealValue project, experts were invited to share their opinion on technological and cost potentials, drivers and risks. On the second day of the RealValue Workshop, the project partners discussed how to model the electricity market and the potential contribution of SETS. DIW condensed the contributions to the workshop in an online document for project contributors to discuss. After a four weeks discussion process, these contributions will inform the output of the work package.
Bracing for change: recipes for a consumer's new deal.
On the 2nd December 2015, Glen Dimplex presented the RealValue Project at the Eurelectric Event ‘Bracing for change: recipes for a consumer’s new deal’.
The event took place in Brussels and it brought together senior industry leaders to discuss how utility companies are radically changing their business model towards enhanced customer service, innovative products and added-value solutions. The event was attended by over 100 delegates from a wide range of public and commercial organisations from the EU energy sector who were given insights into retail companies’ strategies and a place to debate - with EU policymakers, regulators and consumer representatives – the necessary adjustments to the existing regulatory framework.
Eurelectric has launched it's new INNOVATION mini website and the RealValue Project has been selected to contribute to this exciting new initiative from the Retail Unit of Eurelectric.
RealValue is contributing to and being promoted in the following areas:

Coordinators, Chairs and Rapporteurs met for two days in Brussels to discuss the initial findings of the four Working Groups and to share these experiences and information with DG Energy and INEA.
During these meetings the BRIDGE Cooperation Group was established. This group consists of all the Chairs and Rapporteurs of the four Joint Working Groups. This group will meet every six months.
The main objective of this group is to create a Knowledge Transfer Sharing Platform and to ensure consistency between Working Groups.
The RealValue project kicked off with a meeting at the Office of the Northern Ireland Executive in Brussels on the 1st July.
The meeting spread over two days and had a great turnout with all partners attending, totalling thirty one people on both days. Our EC Project Manager from INEA also dropped in on the second day and was impressed by the sessions he participated in. We would like to thank all Partners for their support during the Kick off Meeting and the preparation carried out.
On 23 September 2015, Glen Dimplex participated in ShowCASE event organised by the Centre for Advanced Sustainable Energy (CASE).
The aim of the event was to provide information of how to access £1.5m of funding for R&D collaboration in the sustainable energy sector and to hear from projects already under way in the thriving sustainable energy sector in Northern Ireland. Rowena McCappin, the Project Director of Glen Dimplex was invited to present the RealValue Project which is funded under the H2020 Research and Innovation Programme. The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) recently produced the booklet on the various project cases supported under FP7 and H2020.
The ‘Building on Ireland’s energy research performance’ booklet was launched at the Energy Work programme Info day on 30th September in Dublin.
This publication include a number of projects illustrating the diversity of Irish participation in EU research which ranges from ocean energy systems to concentrated solar power to integrated design and community engagement. This research and innovation has been enabled through the EU research programmes Under Horizon 2020. One of the success story in this publication is the RealValue project. DRIVING change in the energy sector, a European consortium with world-leading Irish expertise has received the first phase of approval for a €12million (£9.5million) grant from the European Commission’s Horizon 2020* fund.
The research and innovation grant will bring to fruition a large scale pilot study into the future of small-scale energy storage, and will see thousands of Portadown-manufactured Glen Dimplex Quantum energy systems installed throughout Europe.
The twelve-strong RealValue consortium** is unique in that it encompasses the entire energy supply chain, including many of the major players in the Irish energy sector - Glen Dimplex, SSE Airtricity, ESB Networks, EirGrid, Intel and the Electricity Research Centre at University College Dublin.
Commencing in April 2015, RealValue will involve the installation of Glen Dimplex Quantum energy systems into 1250 homes, 100 of which will be in Northern Ireland. The study will also include 700 homes in Ireland with the remaining pilot homes situated in Germany and Latvia.
Replacing traditional storage heaters, the Quantum energy system combines efficient, high-performance electric space and water heating with thermal energy storage capability. It was launched in 2013 as a result of the biggest-ever investment by Glen Dimplex in one piece of technology, and Research and Development for Quantum was driven by Glen Dimplex subsidiary – GDC Portadown.
With RealValue, the Quantum systems will be linked to energy providers via highly-advanced technology, developed by Intel. The smart system will also interpret data to forecast heat demand and consumer comfort preferences, and it will interact with the grid to manage supply and congestion.
Explaining the rationale and importance of RealValue, Chairman of Glen Dimplex, Mr Sean O’Driscoll commented: “RealValue involves testing pioneering technology on a large scale to accelerate innovation. It’s the first large testing of this game-changing new model for renewable energy storage and will be instrumental in developing business models to quantify the potential of small scale storage moving forward.
“We are confident that RealValue will be a catalyst for change and we intend to present the results of the project to policy decision makers, helping to inform EU regulation.
RealValue is also a text book for collaboration in Northern Ireland, Ireland and within the EU, covering private and public sector enterprises working closely with academic research to deliver innovative business solutions of the future.”
From the RealValue consortium, Managing Director of SSE Airtricity, Stephen Wheeler added: “‘SSE Airtricity is delighted to be a key partner in this ground breaking initiative. The project will enable Northern Ireland and Ireland to lead the way in integrating small scale storage, at individual house level. This has the potential to deliver real consumer benefit in the future as well as enabling more renewable energy to be produced on the island: creating jobs, reducing CO2 and actively contributing to long term sustainability and security of energy supply.”
